Magnetic shape memory (MSM) alloys are, of current interest for the use in actuators due to their large achievable strain and high operation frequency. Until now, different MSM actuator concepts have already been developed. One of them is the so-called push-push concept whereby two antagonistically operating MSM elements generate linear motion. An advantage of this concept is the exploitation of the material”™s hysteresis characteristic offering to keep a certain position without inducing a magnetic field. This paper deals with the design and realization of a push-push actuator and analyzes its characteristic behavior. Furthermore, two approaches for the generation of the coil currents in combination with a PI-controller are introduced and experimental results are given.
